What is boss on a shield?

A boss on a shield is a raised circular or oval metal plate located in the center of a shield. It is used to protect the shield and deflect blows from weapons such as swords, axes, and spears.

Historically, bosses were made from iron, bronze or copper and were often decorated with engravings or patterns. They were an essential part of a warrior's shield and provided additional weight and balance for the shield.

The boss also had a practical purpose in combat. When the shield was held in front of the warrior's body, the boss would be at head level, and any penetrating blows from the enemy's weapon would be deflected off the boss and away from the warrior.

Bosses on shields are still used today in various forms for ceremonial purposes, reenactments, and historical displays.
